Common ESI-MS adducts and their mass shifts

Adduct masses for electrospray mass spectrometry: what to add to the neutral monoisotopic mass, and what to divide by, to predict an observed m/z. Useful in reverse too, for identifying an unexpected peak as sodium rather than a product.

Notes

  • m/z = (M x multiplier + mass shift) / charge. Proton mass 1.007276 Da, electron mass 0.000549 Da.
  • A peak 22 Da above the expected mass is almost always sodium, and it usually came from the glassware or the solvent rather than from the reaction.
