Formula: C₁ · V₁ = C₂ · V₂
Use C1V1 = C2V2. Rearranged for the volume of stock you need: V1 = (C2 x V2) / C1. Measure that volume of stock, then top up to the final volume, rather than adding the final volume of diluent to it.
Worked example
Formula: C₁ · V₁ = C₂ · V₂
V₁ = (C₂ · V₂) / C₁V₁ = (1 M · 100 mL) / (12 M) = 8.333 mLV₂ − V₁ = 91.67 mLMeasure 8.333 mL of 12 M HCl and dilute to 100 mL total volume.
